7/8 DT Term 1 Bags

7/8 Boys DT

Hi Boys here is our web page which i will use to communicate things that we have covered in class as well as provide other interesting links and material.

Week 1
Today we talked about design and what it means. We came up with the idea the design often means that we need to create a tool, machine or system to solve a problem which will hopefully make life easier for us.
This term or 'Problem' is that we need to carry many items at once. So, our solution will be to make a bag to carry these items.
We talked about the importance of research and that good designers will see what others have done to solve similar problems before we have come across them.

Homework Research some other bag designs on the web or magazine and get a photo of them to bring to class. try to find some that are interesting.

NB: By now you should have a title page, a drawing of your bag, and an exploded view version of a bag of your choice as well.

Here is a cool bag design from incase designs. Check out more of their stuff here incase

Week two
This week we are talking about the idea of a prototype. In class I use the example of Lamborghini wheels. If we had to make 1200 wheels for example we would want to get our design right before we made all of these so we would make a prototype.
Finish construction of your 3D version of your bag (the one that you plan to design). Try to include as much detail as possible in the model and make it small but a decent size.
Homework...
Find and write in your books a definition of the term Prototype. (hint use the link on the word prototype above)
Week Three
this week we need to...
  • settle on an awesome design, finish rendered (coloured drawings), prototype
  • create pattern for final bag
  • establish measurements for bags
Design Brief. Write A design brief for your bag.
Think about the size your bag will be, come up with Dimensions for each panel. Use existing bag to get an idea of the proportions.
Scale. Scale is used to make an object or place smaller or bigger in order to gain an exact idea of the proportions and shape of a space or object. We see scale used in maps, model cars, as well as in scientific (for example) images where magnification is needed to see detail such as in microscopic images. Using correct scale is important in our design to maintain proportions in drawings, to give a true representation of the relationship between various element of our bag.

Here a some examples of patterns used in textiles

Homework: week three, is to...
make sure your folders are up to date. this includes
  1. Title page
  2. research page inspiration i.e. coloured photos of cool bag designs that you like
  3. drawing of your school bag good quality
  4. Drawing of the bag you are going to make (concept sketch)
  5. exploded view of the bag you are going to make neatly drawn
  6. all drawings should be labelled and dated and completed to a good standard
  7. homework tasks definitions completed
PLEASE get this done it is part of your assessment. Thank you
TO COME photos of my drawings and prototype
Week 4
Aims this week: Complete pattern design (template) for bag with all messurements and panels
Start work on creating the final pattern.
Folio should be up to date

This week Nan showed us how to create a flat seem using the sowing machine  here is a demo from you tube

Week 5/6/7
Marking criteria, Design criteria
Design Criteria or in our case

AS you are aware design is much more than making a product it involves a whole process in order to create the best possible produce to suit a need - the need is framed by what we call the design criteria. In our case the design criteria is also the marking criteria.

Marking Criteria
  1. Folio
  2. Prototype and pattern
  3. final Bag
...each of these three elements contirbute to your mark
Check this out if in need of so inspiration to keep you going
